Molenlanden
Promoting energy transition, biodiversity, climate adaptation and circular economy
DescriptionOverview of the initiative and its approach.
Under the Smart Rural 27 initiative, Molenlanden – an inner periphery municipality of Rotterdam in the Netherlands – is aiming to become greener through improvements to its waste management operations, and by increasing its reliance on sustainable energy, with the overarching goal of becoming a climate-proof region. The village, supported by the Foundation Sustainable Molenlanden, promotes initiatives and projects in four areas: energy transition, biodiversity, climate adaptation and circularity. Nature, the community and digitalization are the main targets of the initiative.
TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.
Under the smart village initiative, a web portal has been created where the general public is encouraged to share their contributions, ranging from capturing wildlife on camera and installing solar panels with connected meters, creating energy-neutral houses, to planting trees and promoting vegetation in local gardens and streets.
TargetUsers, groups, or communities targeted by the initiative.
The main beneficiaries of the project are the rural community and its inhabitants, who benefit from the knowledge and experience shared by other members of the public and the projects promoted by the community, all of which contribute to a more sustainable, zero waste and liveable settlement.
ImpactThe observed or intended effects of the initiative.
The initiative seeks to promote the transition to sustainable energy and reduced CO2 emissions, and to bring biodiversity to the local gardens and streets, allowing the settlement to absorb the increased rainfall that has come with the changing climate, to minimize heat stresses, and to play host to more insects and birds. As an overall impact, Molenlanden envisages a greener community, sustainable houses that use sustainable energy, and a climate-proof region.
