Roadmap for the digitalization of agriculture

Strategy and action plan 2024-2030

Description

Under the "Provision of Technical Assistance on E-agriculture to the Ministry of Agriculture" project provided through FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme TCP/TAJ/3810/C8, FAO supported the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan in developing a roadmap for the digitalization of the agriculture sector. The national roadmap for the development of digital agriculture in Tajikistan proposes to focus on four overarching strategic outcomes – or pillars – to achieve the vision and the agricultural priorities for the country: Pillar 1: To develop the foundations for digital agriculture (“Foundations”). Pillar 2: To harness data and building e-government systems for agriculture (“E-government and data”). Pillar 3: To advance agricultural knowledge, skills and innovation (“Knowledge, skills and innovation”). Pillar 4: To grow a market ecosystem for digital agriculture (“Market Ecosystem”).

The roadmap for digital agriculture in Tajikistan emphasizes leveraging the country's strengths by identifying and prioritizing niches in both technology and agriculture development. It highlights opportunities in the apricot value chain and other high-value crops like berries, promoting smart farming, precision agriculture, and traceability systems to maximize their potential. The roadmap also proposes specialization in technology niches, such as LoRaWAN networks for remote monitoring, open-source solutions to reduce costs and foster innovation, and AI-powered advisory tools for non-digital literate farmers.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Medium size farms
  • Large size farms
  • Public sector
  • Rural communities

Overall, the roadmap is intended to serve as a guide for policymakers, development partners, private sector actors, and other stakeholders interested in promoting the digitalization of agriculture in Tajikistan.
