Smart Coop

Solar-powered IoT poultry coop for sustainable farming and ecotourism

Description

Smart Coop is an innovative solar-powered poultry farming solution implemented in Mirogoshch, Belarus under the GEF/UNDP Small Grants Programme aimed at making small-scale poultry farming cheaper, simpler to run, and attractive for agro-ecotourism. The system automates key functions such as ventilation, lighting, temperature, and humidity control through IoT sensors and mobile applications. Each coop is designed for 10 birds and integrates sustainable energy solutions with modern farming technology.

Technology

  • Internet of things (IoT)
  • Sensor
  • Mobile app

Smart Coop utilizes IoT sensors to monitor and control ventilation, lighting, temperature, and humidity to keep stable conditions with minimal daily labor. The system is powered by solar panels and can be monitored and controlled through a mobile application. In summer, solar can cover the coop’s energy needs for up to two weeks of autonomous operation, while energy-saving tech keeps it functional through winter; controlled light/temperature extends the laying season and can deliver ~5–7 eggs/day per coop.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Rural communities

The Smart Coop is designed for smallholder farmers and rural communities. The system in Mirogoshch serves both agricultural production and ecotourism purposes, demonstrating sustainable farming practices to visitors.

Business model

  • Donor support

As a pilot project supported by UNDP, the Smart Coop demonstrates sustainable farming technologies. The system costs approximately USD 1800 per coop with an expected payback period of two years.

Impact

Smart Coop reduces labor and energy costs while improving animal welfare through automated environmental control. The project demonstrates sustainable farming practices and supports rural development through both agricultural production and ecotourism activities.
