Geospatial data management and digital adaptation planning

Description

The project supports rural communities and institutions in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to adapt to climate change by integrating digital tools into local planning and decision-making. It applies geospatial analysis, participatory mapping, and climate information to assess climate risks, identify adaptation measures and strengthen institutional capacities for evidence-based climate adaptation in rural areas.

The initiative uses geographic information systems and remote sensing technologies combined with web-based analytical tools to collect, visualize, and analyze spatial and climate-related data. Participatory digital mapping tools support community-level data collection, while analytical outputs are used by public institutions and development actors for planning and monitoring climate adaptation measures.

The primary beneficiaries are rural communities in climate-vulnerable areas of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as national and local public institutions involved in climate adaptation planning. The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), providing technical assistance, infrastructure, and training free of charge to government and community stakeholders.

Impact

The project contributed to improved availability and use of spatial climate and risk data for rural adaptation planning. Evaluations report strengthened institutional capacities for climate-informed decision-making, enhanced community participation in adaptation planning, and improved identification of climate risks and adaptation options in targeted rural areas.
