Tumar was a mobile phone application that aided users in the management of their livestock by supporting the control of grazing quality and the planning of cattle care, providing insights and professional advice, and serving as an online app for the purchase and sale of raw materials and finished products.

Tumar was a mobile phone application available on Android and iOS phones, and used Russian as the app language. Farmers or consumers could draw upon the app’s geolocation capabilities to access food market prices within a certain radius. The mobile app also used GPS- and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)-based animal monitoring collars to collect data about livestock locations, and to track the health status and activity of individual animals. Livestock locations were monitored through the GPS tracking collar that was provided with the app. Tumar used satellite and GPS data to generate informative maps, detailing pasture vegetation, humidity, nitrogen and chlorophyll levels.

Impact

Tumar is no longer active, but the app aimed to increase production efficiency in the highly competitive Kazak cattle-rearing sector by increasing the rate of survival and the quality of cattle, while improving the quality of grazing and increasing overall farm productivity. The initiative also claimed that the app supported the creation of information networks among farmers and experts, facilitating increased innovation in the cattle-rearing sector.
