Resilient and competitive climate-smart agriculture in Türkiye

Description

The Türkiye Climate Smart and Competitive Agricultural Growth Project is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry with support from the World Bank. The project promotes climate-smart practices, efficient irrigation, and digital tools while enhancing veterinary and extension services. The four components focus on strengthening institutional capacity for climate-smart policies and investments, building animal health systems for effective disease control, supporting farm-level investments in productivity, resource efficiency, and climate resilience, and project management, monitoring, and evaluation.

The project combines GIS and remote sensing with digital farm management platforms. Cloud-based systems process satellite imagery and sensor data to track water use, crop growth, and climate risks. Big data analytics and decision-support models underpin desktop and web tools, enabling farmers, advisors, and institutions to plan and monitor agricultural activities effectively. Project documents, including monitoring reports and safeguards, are available on the official website and can be downloaded. A grievance redress mechanism is also in place, allowing stakeholders to submit complaints.

More than 80 000 farmers are expected to participate directly, with wider impacts through improved water management and resilient production systems.

The project is financed through a World Bank loan of USD 341 million together with government resources, with no costs for farmers or rural communities. Training, advisory services, and infrastructure upgrades are free of charge, following a donor support model that removes financial barriers to adopting climate-smart practices.

Impact

The project aims to build climate resilience and strengthen productivity and competitiveness across crop, livestock, and land management systems in Turkish agriculture. Expected outcomes include lower emissions, improved soil and water management, stronger smallholder market access, and better rural livelihoods through advisory services and modern infrastructure.
