Adopt an Olive Tree

App and sensors supporting an “adopt an olive tree” programme in Oliete Smart Village

Description

The "Adopt an Olive Tree" initiative is managed via an online app that connects olive tree farmers in Greece with consumers around the world. Consumers who adopt an olive tree receive a yearly harvest of high-quality olive oil, while simultaneously supporting sustainable farming practices in Spain. To participate in the initiative, consumers visit the Adopt an Olive Tree website and select a tree from one of several participating farms in Greece. The initiative has helped small-scale farmers access new markets and increase their income, while also preserving traditional farming practices and promoting environmental sustainability. Technology

  • Mobile app
  • GPS
  • Sensor
  • Drone
  • Internet of things (IoT)

The initiative utilizes several tools and technologies, including a unique QR Code created for every olive tree, sensors in the olive grove, geolocation, a digital field notebook, drones and mobile devices for video calls and image captures, and a mobile app that allows the adoptive parents to monitor their tree's progress.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Medium size farms
  • Rural communities
  • Food consumers

The main users of the AdoptAnOliveTree.org initiative are people who want to support small-scale olive farmers and adopt an olive tree in exchange for the receipt of high-quality, extra virgin olive oil produced from the tree they adopted. Smallholders can be potential users of the Adopt an Olive Tree initiative due to its low cost and easy-to-use technologies.

Business model

  • Donor support

The online platform is free to access, and subscription is also free. The business model is based on fees charged for the adoption of the olive trees to people or organizations, who subsequently receive an adoption certificate and regular updates on the tree's development, and the olive oil produced from the trees is sold as an additional source of revenue. The initiative operates on a social enterprise model, with profits being reinvested into the project to further its impact.

Impact

The initiative has had several positive impacts, including the creation of new income opportunities for small-scale farmers, the preservation of traditional farming practices, the promotion of sustainable agriculture and the promotion of cultural tourism in rural Spain. The initiative also raises awareness among consumers about the environmental and social impact of their purchasing decisions, as well as the importance of supporting small-scale farmers and sustainable agriculture.
