Agridata space
Project for the development of a European framework for a secure and trusted agricultural data space
Description
AgriDataSpace is a multi-year project paving the way for a European agricultural data space and a common agri-data framework supporting standardization in the sharing, processing and analysis of data in a secure, trusted, transparent and responsible environment. The initial stages of the project will see the development of a framework, the establishment of partnerships and the creation of the necessary technical infrastructure, with the aim being to enter into full operation by the end of the 2020s. The project is providing new opportunities for the monitoring and optimization of natural resources and is stimulating data-driven innovations.
Technology
The technologies explored throughout the project include data exchange platforms and cloud infrastructures related to agricultural products and initiatives, while the presented case studies address such issues as big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructures, including freemium software, sensors and blockchain, supporting the automatic generation of metrics for assessments of animal welfare. Also exemplified are platforms that allow farmers to access and share data from various sources, including sensors, satellites, drones and weather stations.
Target
The AgriDataSpace consortium has brought together a multidisciplinary team of experts from leading research institutes, agriculture data intermediaries and industrial associations representing 10 countries rooted in the EU data space ecosystem. Farmers and other agri-food stakeholders, such as competent authorities, researchers and evaluators, and civil society organizations from all over Europe are targeted by the activities and outputs of this project.
Business model
The project is funded by the European Union with an overall budget of EUR 2 million; access to the project activities and deliverables is free of charge. In future, the project aims to generate different revenue streams and to create public value from agricultural data.
Impact
As of November 2024, there have been no assessments of the impacts achieved by the project, although the overall desired objective is to develop a conceptual reference architecture for a common agricultural data space and a reference technology canvas. The project seeks to enhance implementation and inclusivity, and to engage stakeholders in various evaluation and validation activities with the goal of reaching broad consensus on the development of a roadmap that complies with all requirements, and ultimately, the creation of a comprehensive plan for the creation of an agricultural data space for the European Union.
