COMMECT

Digital connectivity project for rural communities

Description

COMMECT is a project connecting five living labs, that cover Luxembourg’s digitalization of viticulture, Norway’s connected forestry, Denmark’s connected livestock transport, Türkiye’s smart olive farming, and Serbia’s sustainable agriculture and environment. The project main objectives are empowering and training rural communities, increasing competitiveness and access to new services and business opportunities, facilitating decisions on the most appropriate connectivity contributing to climate-change mitigation and strengthening resilience and sustainability.

COMMECT applies a stack of connectivity and data technologies and validates them through five country Living Labs. In Luxembourg, they combine IoT sensing and remote sensing with digital twin approaches for vineyard monitoring and decision support. In Norway, they test IoT and drone-enabled monitoring to support forestry operations and situational awareness in remote areas. In Denmark, they pilot hybrid connectivity options to ensure reliable data exchange for livestock transport and logistics. In Türkiye, they integrate field sensors to feed early warning services for olive pest and disease management. In Serbia, they experiment with shared rural energy and connectivity infrastructure to enable monitoring and automation where coverage and power supply are constrained. The project also provides an AI-based Decision-Making Support Tool (DST) that guides rural users in selecting appropriate connectivity and digital technology options for their specific context.

Target

  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Farm advisors
  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers
  • Public sector
  • Private sector
  • Rural communities
  • Academia and research institutions

Beneficiaries include rural communities, public authorities, farms of all sizes, cooperatives, and advisors. Smallholder farmers gain affordable, fit-for-purpose connectivity options and guidance.

Business model

  • Donor support
  • Fully free

COMMECT is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project, Grant Agreement ID 101060881, delivered by a consortium of 18 partners in nine countries, with a total budget of EUR 5 million. In five Living Labs, solutions are designed and tested together with farmers, cooperatives and public authorities.

Impact

COMMECT aims to accelerate the development of the rural areas and their communities by making smart agriculture and forest services accessible. The platform intends to improve coverage and reduce downtime, waste and safety risks, while enabling access to e-services. Wider uptake is supported by open materials, webinars, practical guides, publications, videos, deliverables and stakeholder workshops.
