Description
The Digital Development Strategy (DDS) 2024–2030 is a policy framework developed by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that outlines a vision for the inclusive, responsible and sustainable digital transformation of developing countries, built around four interconnected objectives: Digital Transformation, catalysing the economy, government and society through digital technologies; Digital Inclusion, ensuring no one is left behind in the digital world; Digital Responsibility, ensuring a safe, secure and resilient digital environment; and Digital Sustainability, promoting the use of digital technologies in support of climate change and environmental efforts.
Technology
The digital technologies promoted by the strategy related to agriculture/climate change include, among others: artificial intelligence (AI)-supported climate modelling and weather forecasting, and improved access to clean energy; smart green grids and Pay-as-You-Go access to solar energy; interactive video-based voice recording channels for the digitalization of the agricultural value chain; digital platforms facilitating climate finance, such as Odyssey and Cavex; Early-Warning Systems to improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts, and the integration of mobiles and SMS messaging into Early-Warning Systems in East Africa; and the use of distributed sensors and population data to monitor air quality and drones to monitor reforestation efforts.
Target
The target users of the policy are academia and research institutions, rural communities, and the private and public sectors, all of whom can benefit from the supported initiatives and technologies and the presented case studies.
Impact
The initiatives included within the policy aim to reduce emissions and mitigate environmental impacts: by improving resilience and responses to climate change and disasters; by improving information gathering, the targeted delivery of humanitarian assistance, and the development of smarter and more sustainable techniques and practices; and by getting more farmers and small-scale producers involved through digital advisory services. The promoted digital technologies are expected to improve the monitoring of climate, biodiversity and ecosystems by increasing the quantity of data collected from cheaper sensors and ensuring the necessary computing power for its interpretation.
