Description

In the pilot Digital Villages of Novkent and Yuksalish in Uzbekistan, and Lolazor in Tajikistan, FAO, in collaboration with its partners and local experts, has carried out a capacity-building programme aimed at equipping farmers with the necessary skills for the effective use of their mobile devices. The training provided in the two countries followed similar curricula, with focus on basic digital literacy skills, social media management and digital marketing. The training in Uzbekistan showed the participating farmers how they could navigate Telegram and YouTube to find information, verification and discussions, and informed them about privacy management. The farmers learned to make optimum use of such Telegram features as channels, bots and polls. The segments related to YouTube focused on farming techniques, machinery maintenance and crop care, while the benefits of social media were explained for such activities as product presentation, buyer communication and market expansion through professional profiles. Specific digital platform sessions complemented the agriculture-related training, while entrepreneurship training empowered the farmers with business development tools, market insights and digital marketing strategies. They were also given guidance on how to set up online sales channels through e-commerce integration. In Tajikistan, the initial training centred on digital safety, setting up Google accounts and online banking, as well as various previously underutilized phone functionalities. The training then delved into the various free-access agriculture-related applications and online platforms available to farmers in Tajikistan, including an online calculator for inputs, mobile apps containing sources of information and knowledge about specific crops and livestock, as well as other information and e-commerce resources. The training concluded with a presentation on the fundamental aspects of digital marketing through Instagram and Facebook. The 3-day programme included practical exercises and homework.

Farmers underwent training to harness the productive potential of the basic applications already installed on their phones but previously underutilized for agricultural purposes, such as Telegram, YouTube and various other social media platforms. Further instruction was provided on the use of more advanced mobile applications and services related specifically to agriculture, as well as in the marketing of products through existing e-commerce and social media platforms. In Uzbekistan, one subgroup of farmers received training in the utilization of smart sensors based on an Internet of Things (IoT) approach to the regulation of greenhouse conditions.

Training was provided to selected members of the rural communities in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Efforts were made to include participants from the more vulnerable households, resulting in a diverse range of attendees, including those with disabilities and single mothers.

The trainings were open for participation without cost for attendance. In Uzbekistan, the sessions were hosted in existing community facilities, including the village community centre. In Tajikistan, the sessions were held in a well-equipped venue due to the limited amenities in the village, such as a reliable Wi-Fi connection and uninterrupted electricity. FAO provided financial support for the hiring of trainers and the acquisition of the necessary class equipment and materials, such as video projectors, printouts, etc.

Impact

The provision of digital literacy training to rural communities, focusing on basic digital skills, resources for agriculture, social media management and digital marketing, can bring about positive changes, allowing the residents of rural communities to become better connected, to find useful information online and to engage more with their local communities. Farmers can improve their agricultural practices, while other residents can explore new job opportunities or start online businesses. The training also deals with the issue of online safety, ensuring a secure experience. In Tajikistan, most of the participants set up Google and social media accounts, and even learned to communicate via email with the project team. Overall, the training facilitates the integration of individuals and communities with the digital age, fostering economic growth, education and community development.
