Edenderry
Using IoT to improve town management and climate resilience
Description
Edenderry is a village in county Offaly, Ireland that witnessed 95 percent population growth from 1996 to 2016, placing a considerable burden the provision of services and employment. Under the Smart Rural 27 initiative, the village launched the “e-denderry” project, in which connected sensors (Internet of things), Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) connectivity and other applications from the “Smart Town Technology project” were used to increase the efficiency of public services and the environmental sustainability of town management.
Technology
The technologies used in the e-denderry project include 25 IoT sensors installed in various locations across Edenderry; LoRaWAN Connectivity; and Cellnex Smartbrain, to monitor parking, litter and air quality and to support building management. The lessons learned from the e-denderry project will guide the development of a Programme Logic Controller that will be integrated into a custom Printed Circuit Board, drawing data from a range of IoT sensors to support flood management and to measure water quality parameters, among others.
Target
The main targets of the initiative are governmental bodies in the public sector, which gain access to more accurate information about the status of town’s buildings and local infrastructures. Consequently, the general public, and therefore, the rural community, benefit from access to better services, including safer water quality and cleaner environments.
Impact
The desired objective of the e-denderry project is to support the council in the management of its public buildings and to make the provision of public services more effective, ensuring the sustainable development of the town and encouraging consolidated and coherent development.
