EU Member States’ Geoportals

Online hub featuring geoportals of EU Member States for IACS data

Description

The geoportals of the Member States are web-based applications for the gathering and dissemination of spatial data via remote sensing as part of the Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS) under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The European Commission Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) provides access to the geoportals of all Member States in a single hub.

Technology

  • GIS
  • Remote sensing
  • Website

Geoportals use Geographic Information System (GIS) data and remote sensing technologies such as satellite imagery from Copernicus and Galileo to gather high-resolution data about the state of agricultural land and other ecosystems. The Commission’s DG AGRI hub is a website through which the geoportals of all Member States can be accessed from a single point, with filtering options and visualization functionalities facilitating access to spatial data by such users as researchers and policymakers. The geoportals are fully integrated into IACS and provide spatial data for the delivery and monitoring of CAP interventions.

Target

  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers
  • Public sector
  • Private sector

The geoportals established by EU Member States under the CAP are used by a variety of stakeholders engaged in agricultural management, policy compliance and subsidy administration. The users are typically farmers and landowners, national and regional agriculture and rural development authorities, paying agencies, auditors and on-spot farm check inspectors, environmental and land-use researchers, and other EU authorities involved in the management, financing, monitoring and auditing of the CAP.

Business model

  • Fully free

The geoportals are co-funded by the European Union and the Member States, and access to the garnered data is free of charge, but may require preliminary registration.

Impact

As of November 2024, the hub is linked to 42 geoportals in the Member States. IACS Geoportals improve the accuracy, efficiency and transparency of agricultural subsidy management and facilitate compliance checks across the European Union. The system also supports sustainable agricultural practices and alignment with the EU goals related to climate resilience and environmental stewardship in the agricultural sector.

Four Betters
