Description
Users can access the EU Pesticides Database to find information on the active substances in plant protection products, the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in food products and the emergency authorizations of plant protection products in the Member States. Each Member State is fully responsible for granting emergency authorizations, and for the information provided in the database.
Technology
The EU Pesticides Database is an interactive website with filtering options that guides users to information on active and basic substances, food products, pesticide residues and emergency authorizations. The database can be freely accessed and browsed online, with convenient download options that streamline access to pesticide data. For IT specialists and developers, it features machine-to-machine APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that link directly to the database, allowing access to the latest pesticide information by other electronic service providers for their applications, research projects or analyses.
Target
The main users of the database are the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the competent food-safety authorities in the Member States and pre-accession countries. Other users are farmers, food producers, processors and distributors, who can learn which pesticides are authorized and under which conditions (e.g. maximum residue levels). The database is also a source of information in support of policy, research and innovation, contributing to improvements in food safety, toxicology, public health and environmental science.
Business model
The EU Pesticides Database has been co-funded by the European Union and its Member States. Access to the database is free of charge, although only the competent authorities in the Member States can upload data, after registration and approval.
Impact
As of November 2024, there have been no evidence-based assessments of the impacts of the database. Among the desired objectives, the EU Pesticides Database supports stakeholders along the food supply chain by providing them with up-to-date information on pesticide approvals, restrictions and residue limits, ensuring adherence to the EU food safety and environmental standards. A total of 1481 active substances are registered on the system, while safeners and synergists are registered on the database with different statuses (approved, pending, declined).
