Kosovo Forest Information System (KFIS)

Supporting policy and management

Description

Kosovo Forest Information System (KFIS) is a forest information system designed to support the Kosovo Forest Agency and other public institutions in managing forest data and implementing forest policy. The solution provides a permanent digital platform for storing, updating and analyzing forest information, enabling more transparent and coordinated forest management that contributes to sustainable natural resource use, climate change mitigation and rural development.

Technology

  • Desktop/web-based application
  • GIS

The digital initiative is a modular desktop and web-based application that integrates geographic information system (GIS) tools for forestry. KFIS organizes forest-related spatial and tabular data in a centralized database, allowing authorized users to view, edit and analyze forest compartments, ownership and management activities. The solution connects GIS layers with management modules so that forest planning, monitoring and reporting are directly linked to georeferenced data.

Target

  • Public sector
  • Academia and research institutions
  • Farm advisors

KFIS is mainly used by public-sector institutions responsible for forest management and policy in Kosovo, including the Kosovo Forest Agency, line ministries and related inspectorates. Additionally, the solution supports technical officers, planners and decision-makers in these institutions by providing structured access to forest information for preparing management plans, monitoring forest use and implementing forest policy.

Business model

  • Donor support
  • Fully free

Kosovo Forest Information System (KFIS) is developed and deployed through contracts between Geo&Land and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for use by public institutions in Kosovo. Kosovo Forest Information System (KFIS) is funded through project and public-sector resources and is provided to authorized government users without individual license or subscription fees.

Impact

The initiative aims to enhance forest governance in Kosovo by providing a unified platform for forest data that supports more consistent and evidence-based decision-making.
