Mokrin
First digital village in Serbia for smart agriculture and rural revitalization
Description
Digital Village in Mokrin is a village-level digitalization project that turns Mokrin, in the North Banat district of Serbia, into a pilot digital village where farmers and residents use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to modernize agriculture and everyday life and local business opportunities. The village combines on-farm infrastructure, digital platforms and tailored training.
Technology
Digital Village in Mokrin uses local agro-meteorological stations, sensors and connected devices together with satellite-based monitoring and the AgroSense digital platform to collect and analyse weather, soil and crop data. The village provides web and mobile applications through which farmers can view plot-level meteorological information, follow crop development, use satellite indices and maintain digital field records, complemented by locally adapted tools such as the MokrinSens application. The digital village links these tools with village infrastructure, including wireless connectivity and shared facilities at Mokrin House, to support regular use of precision agriculture technologies in everyday farm management.
Target
Digital Village in Mokrin primarily targets farmers from Mokrin, ranging from small family farms to larger holdings, as well as younger rural residents and farm successors by introducing digital skills.
Business model
The Digital Village operates as a demonstration and support project funded through corporate social responsibility and public research resources from partners such as Delta Holding, Mokrin House and OTP Banka Srbija. Services are offered free of charge to participating farms during the pilot period, giving farmers access to devices, applications, training and study visits.
Impact
Digital Village in Mokrin has so far enrolled around 30 agricultural holdings, including at least 24 farms and more than 100 farmers, and has installed about ten agro-meteorological stations and organized at least ten training and information events. The initiative aims to increase farm profitability and input efficiency, foster joint market initiatives, and strengthen the long-term viability of Mokrin as a rural community by reducing outmigration and attracting younger residents back to agriculture.
